Prana is a term used in Yoga to explain the vital life-force energy within the subtle body. Yama means control or restraint. Some say the actual suffix is ayama which means expansion. Let’s just say that Pranayama is breath control with an expanded awareness. All pranayama is based on the normal patterns or breathing: inhalation, short retention, exhalation, and a short retention breath.
