The purpose of this paper is to provide a practical overview for nurses of the evidence for and uses of music therapy for people following acquired brain injury, and to highlight its relevance to the nurse’s role in providing care for this patient population. As a specialist clinical intervention, music therapy is able to effect changes in physical, cognitive, psychosocial and communicative functioning for people with acquired neurological disorders, indicating its role in multiprofessional teams offering maintenance or rehabilitation programmes.
