Musical consciousness is a difficult concept to define for a number of reasons. Not
only is music a very broad and inclusive term comprising different activities (playing
an instrument, listening to performances and recordings, composing, remembering
music), but consciousness also presents different levels of awareness. When music
is ongoing, consciousness can be defined as the ability to be aware of its elements:
melody, rhythm, instrumentation, structure. However, musical consciousness also
involves other aspects, such as the ability to evoke images, emotions, and memories

attributes that are closely related to the self.
